Custom glass block windows provide a proven architectural solution, highly valued for their exceptional durability, structural integrity, and maximum natural light transmission. These specialized windows are a top choice for architects designing schools and public facilities, where securing privacy without blocking daylight is critical. Available in over 100 distinct patterns, glass block windows integrate flawlessly into both modern commercial spaces and classic residential designs.
These modern glass block windows offer energy-saving benefits, and in specific settings, glass blocks can also reduce heat transfer into the space. Unlike standard windows, which may require shades or blinds to manage visibility and privacy, custom glass block windows are designed to offer both without compromising natural light. With customizable patterns, they provide enhanced privacy and some even prevent visibility from the outside altogether, making them a smart choice for areas like bathrooms or showers.
With over 40 years of experience, GBA is more than just a “glass block” company by bringing function and appeal to any projects’ design. We provide top of the line light penetrating architectural products.
Maintenance is incredibly minimal for glass block windows. A simple exterior power wash is usually enough to keep the glass clean. For shower applications, constant contact with soapy water will not harm the material. Simply wipe down your glass block shower walls or use a squeegee to prevent streaks, water spots, soap scum, and mildew. Whether installed as a window, wall, or shower enclosure, the glass is exceptionally easy to maintain.
The location of the glass block window you want to incorporate into your home can affect what glass block design option is selected. With hundreds of options to choose from, there is a glass block pattern for every design aesthetic. Patterns such as Arctic, Clarity, Alpha, and Clearview have been popular glass block pattern options for glass block windows in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. In addition to all the glass block options available to customize your window, one decision to consider is whether you would like the glass block window with a vent or as a solid glass block window/panel.
Including a vent in a glass block window or panel will allow the air to flow from the outside into any room. Vents are offered in sizes ranging from 14"x8"x3" to 24"x8"x3" and feature an insect screen on the inside to keep bugs out of any home or office.
Glass block windows with dryer vents are a common application to vent dryer exhaust hoses to the outside of any home. Washer and dryer units are traditionally found in bathrooms, designated laundry rooms, and basements, all of which are areas many homeowners would like to keep private. Glass block windows with vents are perfect to keep these areas private while allowing large amounts of natural light to pour through.
The Imperial Line of glass block includes four different glass block and brick collections. Featured in this line is Thinline® 3" Glass Block, Premiere™ 4" Glass Block, High Performance Glass Blocks and Bricks, and the Mini Collection (MYMINIGLASS™). In addition, these blocks offer additional resistance to fire, sound transmission, and impact.
This grouping of glass block includes 4" glass block with thicker faces as well as solid glass bricks. With a new innovative process, energy savings glass block reduces the thermal transmittance by up to 50%. This helps with designs where energy savings and sustainability is a main factor.
Glass bricks are offered in multiple different style to accommodate any design. VISTABRIK® is a solid glass unit that can resemble the look of glass block with its 8x8 square shape. Yes, glass block windows are a fantastic option for residential and commercial projects alike. They provide beautiful natural light, exceptional durability, affordability, and guaranteed privacy for sensitive areas.
Visibility depends entirely on the pattern selected. Certain patterns offer a more transparent view, while others heavily obscure details so only basic shapes or silhouettes are visible from the outside.
Glass blocks are increasingly popular among modern architects and designers. They have evolved into a versatile, easily maintained, and eco-friendly product perfect for creating captivating visuals and modern architectural accents.
Glass blocks are typically installed using mortar, which is a mixture of cement, sand, and water. Mortar provides necessary structural support, prevents movement, and creates a weather-resistant seal. Depending on the specific design requirements, special silicone sealants can also be applied for enhanced weatherproofing and visual appeal.
A frame is not always required to lay glass blocks, but it depends on the specific installation and design. Glass blocks can be used in different ways, and the need for a frame will vary based on the intended purpose and structural requirements.
In some cases, glass blocks are used within a structural frame, typically made of materials like metal, wood, or concrete, to provide support and create a specific architectural design. The frame can offer additional stability, especially when glass blocks are used in load-bearing applications or when they form part of a larger structure, such as a window or a wall.
However, glass blocks can also be used without a traditional frame. They can be installed directly into a masonry or mortar bed, creating a self-supporting glass block wall or partition. In such installations, the mortar between the blocks provides the necessary support, and spacer shims help maintain even gaps between the blocks. This approach is often used for decorative or non-load-bearing applications.
Whether a frame is required or not depends on the project's design, structural considerations, and the specific application of the glass blocks.
Applying traditional grout is not standard practice when installing glass block windows. Instead, specialized mortar is the primary material used to bond the blocks, ensuring a highly stable and secure structure. Mortar delivers critical structural support and creates a watertight seal that standard grout cannot provide.
During installation, mortar is applied both horizontally and vertically to fill gaps and permanently bond the glass blocks. This material holds the units firmly in place while working in tandem with specialized spacers to maintain perfectly even alignment. The specific mortar utilized for glass block windows is engineered to be waterproof and structurally sound, preventing air and moisture infiltration. Once fully cured, the mortar joints are often finished with a specialized sealant to maximize moisture protection and enhance the visual finish.
While it is technically possible to use traditional grout for specific design preferences, it is highly discouraged. Standard grout simply does not offer the required structural integrity or waterproofing capabilities necessary for a long-lasting glass block window installation.
Glass block windows are generally more difficult to break compared to traditional single-pane windows. The inherent strength of the glass blocks, along with the way they are installed, contributes to their resistance to breakage. Here are some factors that make glass block windows harder to break:

"We could not be happier with your product and services. We relied on you quite a bit to set the coordination of several items – ceiling heights, curb construction, detailing/engineering – and can’t imagine having another vendor without your expertise and patience. Jeff was especially great throughout the entire experience.
100% will recommend you all here for any other projects in our office.

"As the Senior Project Manager for the general contracting company responsible for completing all aspects of the historical restoration, structural rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse modifications to the derelict Triboro tuberculosis hospital, one of the most difficult challenges was finding capable and qualified subcontractors for the key restoration trades that are both committed to quality construction and respectful of the historical restoration process. I am lucky enough to have worked with GBA on previous successful projects and was glad to bring them into this project. GBA provided the essential expertise and quality craftsmanship that this project needed and was a reliable partner helping us convert the Triboro Tuberculosis Hospital into the T Building Residence." – Senior Project Manager, Bill Harwood for the GC, Mega Contracting
"On behalf of me, my project manager and CGC; I would like to reach out to applaud the quality and workmanship of the crew sent out to do the glass block wall outside of the theater here in Hudson. Dan and Nate went above and beyond to keep their work area organized and clean, even protected our finish trim and VWC in the mixing area with plastic. If only more companies active on site would follow in your companies steps these buildings would be cut and dry and run very efficiently. Thank you! - Jake M. Behler, Cameron General Contractors
