Glass block walls have experienced varying degrees of popularity over the years. They were particularly popular in the mid to late 20th century and have made comebacks in contemporary design.
The appeal of glass block walls lies in their ability to allow natural light while providing privacy and a distinctive aesthetic. They can be used in various architectural and design applications, including bathrooms, showers, partitions, and exterior walls.
Mid-century modern design, which incorporates the use of glass blocks, has seen a resurgence in recent years. And, with the wide selection of new products in the glass block market, including new shapes, textures, even colors, glass block walls have been finding their way into more commercial and residential spaces.
Standard glass block windows are not inherently hurricane-rated and their ability to withstand hurricane-force winds and impacts depends on various factors, including the specific design, installation methods, and the type of glass blocks used. In areas prone to hurricanes or high-wind events, building codes often have stringent requirements for windows and other openings to ensure the safety and structural integrity of buildings during severe weather.
To meet hurricane-resistant standards, glass block windows must be designed and installed according to the local building codes and regulations. This may involve using impact-resistant glass blocks, reinforced framing, and proper anchoring methods.
To be sure a window is hurricane resistant, look for products that are designed explicitly rated for hurricane resistance, such as Seves LightWise® Hurricane Resistant windows.
