Structural glass is becoming more popular among architects and designers who are looking to add that "wow" factor into a project. Because GlassWalk structural glass is engineered to meet each projects' specific requirements, it has become the perfect product for glass floor showcases. It can be used to house temporary or permanent exhibits in a museum, with a grid system that can easily be removed and repurposed in temporary applications. The system is so versatile and can be used in commercial or residential glass floor displays.

GlassWalk is a glass flooring system comprised of a lightweight 6063-T6 aluminum grid framing system and 2 or 3-ply laminated glass units. We offer low iron or standard glass for this floor system along with several traction control frit patterns. Adding a frit to the top layer of the glass helps to add more slip resistance to the glass.

Glass Floor Historic Showcase

When it comes to preserving history that is beneath any current structure, it can be challenging to find a way to showcase it. Incorporating a structural glass floor system can certainly help to add views and light to spaces below the glass. In this glass floor application, Main Street Station utilized GlassWalk structural glass floors into their renovation design. The glass allowed for pedestrian traffic in the station to see historic railroad tracks. The elevated design transformed the original train shed into a multi-modal transportation center and venue space.

Dinosaur Bones Below Glass Floor

The vision for the Laurel Library Expansion included an educational and interactive space for the young children coming to the library. Glowing dinosaur footprints lead visitors through the children's area where a life-size replica of a Nanotryannus skeleton is displayed beneath the GlassWalk glass floor system. The glass floor was designed to protect the exhibit while still allowing for clear views for visitors to see the bones. It was important to design the glass floor with low iron glass creating a see-through glass floor. A transparent perforation frit pattern was also incorporated so while you could look through the glass floor it still maintained it's anti-slip properties.

Mosaic Tiles Under Glass Flooring

Bowling Green State University in Ohio utilized glass flooring to place ancient ruins beneath individual structural glass panels. The tiles were preserved for 50 years before being displayed and protected under air-tight glass. Later it was found that the tiles had come from an unauthorized excavation, unknown to BGSU at the time they purchased the tiles. Since then the tiles have been returned to Turkey, but BGSU has replaced them with replicas. You can still find the replicas on display under transparent glass flooring in the Wolfe Center for the Arts on the BGSU campus.

Care+ Cleaning of Glass Floor Systems

Routine cleaning is important to maintain a beautiful glass floor system. The good news is that they are relatively easy to clean and maintain. When cleaning an internal or external glass floor system, use a non abrasive soap on the glass and aluminum grid. Wipe down with a microfiber cloth or non abrasive floor mop. You can also use a squeegee to remove any water that may be sitting on the top surface of the glass from rain or other natural causes. Be careful not to use any sharp objects when cleaning your glass floor.
